Social stigma can tear parenting families apart. Parents rely on their communities for moral support and understanding. When moral support and understanding run parallel alongside negative messaging, conflict arises that shamefully isolates family members and their children.

The ill effects of social stigma are costly.

Social stigma shuts down conversations, and parents must choose between their social groups or their child.

We have a homeless youth crisis in America. Parents and caregivers succumb to the pressures of social stigma when they do not have support from their communities.

While labels serve the purpose of helping us understand one another, they can pose harm when we hold pre-conceived impressions and need to keep ourselves current with updated information.

Parents confront their internalized fears when children present outside social norms. The fears parents internalize are about what their child's future may hold or what their communities will think of their child or think of them as parents or caregivers. These fears become heightened by either outdated or misguided information and demonizing children and families.

Fears overlap a parent's ability to emotionally adjust to the pressures and negative messaging they receive from their social groups.

This documentary explores the different attitudes of parents and grandparents.
